Medieval Calligraphy
There were a myriad of different scripts used in the writing of illuminated manuscripts. In this worksheet I have created the instructions and historical examples of two main scripts and one variation; Protogothic or Romanesque script, and Gothic textura quadrata more commonly known as black letter gothic. These were used from the 11 - 15 centuries right across Europe in the formation of some of the most beautiful manuscripts. Like modern handwriting, every scribe had their own "hand" that displayed unique and subtle characteristics. Have you tried these scripts yet?
